Why Younger Catholics Seem More Committed: Survivorship Bias and/or “Creative Minority” Effects among British Catholics

The normative value of, and the extent of popular engagement with, different forms commitment differ across Christian religious traditions, but studies often show women older people exhibiting greater religiosity in their behavior belief. Using a multidimensional approach to commitment, this study uses new survey provide an in-depth assessment Catholics Britain. It finds that younger cohorts involvement some aspects there is very limited evidence for gender differences. Family socialization plays key role patterns relative weak impact schooling. Two potential explanations counterintuitively positive “youth effect” seen among British are offered: “survivor bias” “creative minority” effect. provides important contribution understanding how Britain engage with faith mediate processes secularization.
